Concern about Korean regime
’Grave concern at the erosion of human rights in South Korea” was expressed by the North Canterbury Methodist Synod.
The Synod decided to urge the Government to demonstrate opposition to “the repressive State developing under the Park regime," and instructed the Synod public questions committee to look, into ways of expressing sympathy directly to those Koreans in trouble for opposition to the Government. Introducing the subiect. the convener of the public questions committee, the Rev. D. F Prince, said that members of the Student Christian Movement in South Korea had been given long gaol sentences for violating a decree by President Park which forbade any criticism of his Government.
He thought the lot of political prisoners might be improved if people and governments outside Korea made representations.
Mr C. L. Waters said that’ New Zealand had a right tot make representations because this country had contributed' to the United Nations force' which fought in Korea. The war was for nothing if the South Korean Government had become more repressive than the Communists.
