House by Avon subject of contest

The annual Home Design! Competition run by the' I Canterbury Building Centre, is to be based on a house on| the bank of the Avon River! in Christchurch. The house is to be planned for a family of three which enjoys outdoor living and canoeing. The family also has a cat. The competition is open to all secondary school pupils in Canterbury, and will be judged by a panel from the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Institute of Architects. Entries for the competition close on September 6, and prizes to a total value of more than $350 will be presented by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr N. G. Pickering) on September 20.

The site for the home is at the junction of a stream, and the Avon, and it contains a number of large trees.

The requirements of building by-laws can be ignored in the exercise.

During the August school holidays the centre will hold a home colouring competition for primary school children.

The competition will begin on August 26, and will finish on August 30. Children between the ages of eight and 12 will be eligible to compete. Entrants will be given a colouring-in entry form, and will be allowed one hour to fill in the rooms of the “house” with coloured felttipped pens.
