Hearing on taxis
Hearing of applications 'for 24 taxi licences approved ion June 28, began in Christ- ' church yesterday, and will [continue today.
I Ninety applications have ibeen received by the Licensing Authority for the Christchurch Transport District i(Mr J. M. Dwyer). i Only 40 were heard ■yesterday, and five were adjourned until August 20. Mr Dwyer said that applicants would be required, if granted a licence, to own a car not more than five years old and would be expected to work the more unfavourable hours, for at least the first six years. It is to be argued on September 2, whether or not Mr Dwyer can direct an applicant to work for a particular organisation. Most of the applicants said they would be prepared to work for the Gold Band Society if they were directed to do so. ‘ All applicants have had I some connection with the industry either as part-time or full-time drivers for other members of organisations, or as operators, dispatchers, or receivers.
