Shipping lull at Lyttelton

A shipping lull at Lyttelton brought labour surpluses last week and yesterday only 277 men were engaged by day and another 94 for supplementary hours. The only vessels in port vesterdav were the Rio Bravo, Neder Linge. Coastal Trader (roll-on) and the Australian tanker. Caltex Kumell. There was a surplus of 160 men. Inquiries suggest that the lull is seasonal, but shipping experts agree that the whole pattern of seafreighting is changing. Foreign callers are increasing. The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s traffic manager (Mr J. B. Graham) does not foresee any congestion problems for September or October, and present programming indicates a fairly lean August, too. But unfavourable weather and other delays in northern ports were among factors which could cause “bunching” of shipping at Lyttelton, he said. Trade vehicles are pouring into

Lyttelton. Hardly a day goes past when there are not rows of them parked at port. Today, the Union Company's Wanaka is due from Wellington with a special load to ease the demand for Inter-island car space, even though in common with other Union Company Tasman vessels she is heavily engaged in normal inter-colonial trade. She will return to Wellington to load on her normal Melbourne run. :;s :js In reply to N.M.T., of Christchurch. naval men appear to refer to their ships as Canterbury. Otago. Waikato. Taranaki, and so on. Merchant seamen appear to refer to “the” (prefix) Maheno, the Wanaka. the Coastal Trader and so on. Naval men normally say. “I served tn Waikato”: merchantment normally say. “I served in the Rangatlra.” Unfortunately some young seamen today are using the term “on.” which is erroneous. Also, ships are increasingly referred to as “it”—some younger seafarers are guilty of this. too. guilty of this. too. $ «: # ARRIVALS Coastal Trader (9.55 a.m.), 2499. Capt. J.
