Second Lyttelton library petition

One hundred and thirty Lyttelton ratepayers want a referendum on the siting of the new library in London Street. i In a letter to the Lyttelton i Borough Council, the petition■ers asked that a poll be held I on the day of the local-body election in October on the suitability of the council’s choice of site. They were not objecting to the raising of the $50,000 loan, they said. “We have decided on the site of the library. They have no right to ask for a referendum,’’ said Cr R. H. Duff at the meeting of the council last evening. The Mayor (Mr J. B. Collett) said that the group’s right to demand a poll would be investigated under the i Local Bodies Act. the Ministry of Transport reported to the council. Residents should be encouraged to build garages parallel to the road with a short drive in, the report said. People backing cars out of garages at right angles and close to the road were often protruding up to Bft on to the road before they could see. Garages close to the road also made road widening more difficult. AMALGAMATION ISSUE The council reaffirmed its orientation towards Christchurch, and said that amalgamation with peninsula counties was not in the interest of the harbour basin — the Mount Herbert County and Lyttelton Borough Councils. Amalgamation being sought with Lyttelton by the Heathcote County Council would only be considered if it were recognised that the harbour basin was one authority, and that its future lay in Christchurch, Mr Collett said. Refuse collection. — Rubbish collections will begin for borough householders on September 2.
