‘No need for independence’
(,V.Z. Press Association) SUVA, August 11. The Cook Islands Premier (Sir Albert Henry) has said there is now no need for the islands to move quickly towards independence from New Zealand. Speaking during the Cook Islands ninth Constitution celebrations in Raratonga, he revised earlier comments he had made in New Zealand about seeking independence to exploit under-sea manganese deposits. The United Nations Law of the Sea Conference in Caracas had recognised the Cook Islands’ present rights over their waters, so there was now no need to seek rapid independence, said Sir Albert. Orchard funds. — Persons wanting to buy orchards may now borrow up to $40,000 from the Rural Banking and Finance Corporation.—-(P.A.)
