N.Z. women trounced in Tasman Cup golf

(New Zealand Press Association —Copyright) ADELAIDE. The Australian women golfers took the Tasman Gup from New Zealand for the fifteenth time on Saturday, after winning all but one of the eight singles matches.

Overnight, with two foursomes won and two squared, the Australians had held a 6-2 lead on points. By lunch on Saturday with three of the four first-round singles in their keeping, the Australians had the cup virtually won. It led then, 12-4. 20-4 margin New Zealand had the task in the afternoon of winning all four remaining singles to tie the series, but although it was leading at the turn in two, it failed to register a win. Australia finished 20-4 ahead. New Zealand’s only singles winner—and its only winner of the series—was Miss S. Boag, who trounced Mrs A. Alletson, 7 and 6. Mrs Alletson, playing in her first match of the twoday meeting, was unable to settle down. Miss Boag was six up at the turn and hit the greens consistently. '

Miss. Boag was not in such fine form after lunch, and went down, 5 and 4, to Mrs S. McCaw, being only one down at the turn. Miss Boag had three-putted a couple of greens and she dropped back steadily after the turn. There was a disastrous finish to the second singles, between Mrs G. Bannon, of New Zealand, and Miss J. Lock. They had traded holes throughout, were all square at the turn and again at the sixteenth. Caught by hedge Miss Lock was “let off the hook” on the seventeenth when Mrs Bannon missed a short putt after a great recovery from an off-line drive. At the last hole, Miss Lock played a superb 3-wood which hit the right-hand bunker and bounced on to the green. Mrs. Bannon was not so fortunate. She slightly hooked her wood shot and

landed in the left-hand bunker. She over-exploded, and the ball sailed high and in a thick hedge. Taking the penalty (stroke and distance), Mrs Bannon put her second bunker shot on the green for five. It was all in vain, however. Miss Lock sank a 50ft putt for the win. The singles resulted (Australian names first).— Mrs M. Parsons beat Mrs S. Bishop 5 and 4; Miss J. Lock beat Mrs G. Bannon. 1 up; Mrs A. Alletson lost to Miss S. Boag, 7 and 6; Mrs S. MeCaw beat Miss S. Ritchie, 3 and 2. Miss Lock beat Mrs Bishop. 1 up; Mrs Parsons beat Mrs Bannon. 3 and 1; Mrs McCaw beat Miss Boag, 5 and 4: Mrs AUetson beat Miss Ritchie, 3 and 1, Squash.—The New Zealander, L Greene, was beaten, 9-5. 10-8, 9-1. by L. Atkins (Australia) in the first round of the world amateur squash rackets championship in Melbourne. Hockey.— Nelson beat Franklin, 3-2, in a Nordon Cup match for minor men’s hockey associations on Saturday. Nelson, the holder, was down, 1-2. mid-way through the second half.
