C.B.H.S. beats St Bede’s

Christchurch Boys Hit I School won a thoroughly con vincing victory over St Bede’s College on Saturday to share the schools' championship wit! Shirlev Boys’ High School. The score. 28-0, was not a flattering one to the winner. It was Boys’ High School’s third sweeping success In school games in the last few weeks, and it was achieved on a heavy ground, in the classic manner —with forwards who drove hard out-rucked their opponents, and with backs who ran with such speed and purpose that every now and then a determined de fence was breached. St Bede’s attacked vigorous!' for a considerable period in the second spell, without loos Ing very likely to score, and School, with three tries In each spell, was clearly superior. St Bede’s troubles began in the line-outs and scrums. where School was dominant, even tn taking some heels against the head. The development of pla> from line-outs was a School strength, and the fleet backs who handled particularly well were a constant worry to St Bede's, especially when the School half-back ran on the short side from secondary possession. or when the full-back ■ entered the line. The full-back, A. Atkinson, until he left the field with an in- ; jury half-way through the second ’;spell was a dominant figure. A I player of unusual promise, he ' ran with the determination and : I timing of a McCormick, and the II first of his two tries came from a spectacular slanting run : I through the defence. [I The whole School pack played I with purpose, and did just, about ■ everything well. An elusive first • i five-eighths and two fast wings > who knew where to run gave ■.School too many guns for a l|St Bede's side which tried desperately hard. But St Bede's Hacked pace and thrust in the 'backs, and the forwards were ■ for ever back-pedalling to cover II School attacks. li Tries for School were scored Iby Atkinson (two), S. Kinley, : B. Brown. R. McKenzie, and j. , | Dunbar. J. Laugesen converted two tries.
