Storm sweeps away Pakistan’s hopes

(N.Z.P.A. -Reuter— Copyright) LONDON. Pakistan saw its hopes of a big opening score in the second test against England vanish at a rain-drenched Lord’s ground yesterday. Thunder, lightning and downpours reduced the first day’s play to an hour in the morning and three hours in the evening. They also changed a promising batting pitch into a spinner’s delight, and on which Pakistan crashed from an opening partnership of 71 to 130 for nine declared. At the close, England was 42 for one in reply. The sticky evening conditions helped the leg-spinner, D. T. Underwood, to a triumphant five for 20, which broke the back of the Pakistan innings. Its last seven wickets fell for 39 runs in just under an hour.
