A SHIP LIGHTENED

(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, August 2. Westport watersiders have been working in reverse in the last two days —unloading coal from the Karetu. The ship completed loading 3200 tonnes of coal for Portland on July 19, but has been delayed by adverse bar conditions

and flooding of the Buller Riven It was decided on Wed* nesday to lighten the load about 600 tonnes and to attempt a sailing tonight. It is believed that the cost to the Union Steam Ship Company of keeping the Karetu in port has been more than $32,000.

Any shortage of coal at Portland was made up from the Huntly field. The bulk cement carrier Milburn Carrier was also delayed at Westport for a time, and eventually only took 450 tonnes to Napier —about a third of its capacity.
