Sculptor killed in car crash
(New Zealand Preet Association) WELLINGTON, August 2. One of New Zealand’s most prominent artists, the sculptor, John. Panting, died in a car accident in London today.
Mr Panting, aged 34, was head of the sculp* ture department of the Central School of Art, London. He was born in Palmerston North in 1940 and studied at the Canterbury University School of An before studying at the Royal College of Art. London, on r. Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council grant. He returned to New Zealand in 1969 as visiting lecturer in sculpture at the Elam School of Fine Art in Auckland, and also lectured in Christchurch. He was a well recognised young sculptor in Britain, Europe, and the United States, and is represented in collections there as well as in New Zealand. Dr W. B. Sutch. chairman of the Arts Council, today expressed his sympathy.
Mr J. Malcolm, secretary of the council, said Mr Panting obviously had had a distinguished career before him. His appointment at the Central School had been an honour. Mr Panting, is represented in the exhibition, “Six New Zealand Artists,” which will be shown in the Robert McDougall Art Gallery, Christchurch. from November 4 to December 1.
