Table tennis joint leaders beaten
The great uncertainty of table tennis was clearly proved in the penultimate round of the interclub competition last evening. At 10 p.m. United, one of the joint leaders, was in despair as it had been beaten for the second time this season by University.
But, at midnight, the United trio left happily as Selwyn, the other leader, had lost to Riccarton I.
It will be too much to expect either team to lose its final round next week and a play-off seems certain between Selwyn and United.
With Yee Chow Boi back to form and gaining two singles and the first doubles, University always had United under pressure. The vital match was probably the singles between the top players for each team. Ling Nan Ming and W. D. Adamson (United). The score at that point was 5-4 to University. It was an unusual match. Adamson had control In the early stages of the first set, but lost it. Ling had a substantial lead in the second—but he also lost the set. Adamson was ahead 9-6 in the third, dropped five successive points, and never regained his composure. Miss B. A. Taylor added glosr to University’s win with a fine win against H. H. Redmond.
Selwyn led Riccarton, 3-1, i trailed 3-5. but evened at 5-all. However, H. P. Holt, although he went close, was unable to prevent the Riccarton No. 1. J. Armstrong, from completing his three singles wins, and R. W. R. Mercer and A. Alabaster took the final doubles for good measure. , Points: Selwyn 20, United 20, University 18, Riccarton I 16, Avonside I 10, Avonside HI 8, Avonside II 7, Riccarton II 5. United 5, University 7
