‘Old Charlie’ caught

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright! DARWIN, July 7. Police today recovered the claws and head of “Old Charlie,” a 20 ft crocodile known to have inhabited the Mary River system near Darwin in Australia’s Northern Territory for more than 80 years. A reward of $6OO was immediately posted for information leading to the arrest of the persons responsible for killing and skinning Old Charlie, who was estimated to weigh a tonne. A police spokesman said the crocodile was caught in an illegal fishing net, hauled on to the river bank and skinned with his head and claws being buried in a bathtub near the scene. The Darwin Regional Tourist Promotion Association said that Old Charlie’s skin, if cured and mounted with the skull and claw in place, would be worth thousands of dollars.
