Apted back, as coach this time

Harry Apted. the diminutive FijianIndian who scored 3991 runs on four cricket tours of New Zealand between 1948 and 1968, will make another tour of this country this month.

But it will not be in a cricketing role. He will be coach of the first Fijian hockey team to tour New Zealand. It will play 10 matches between July 11 and August 8. Apted. now aged 49, first toured New Zealand with a Fijian cricket side in 1948 when he topped the batting averages with 884 runs at an average of 40.18. His second tour was in 1954 when he totalled 759 runs at 29.19, and was second in the averages to his brother, W. W. Apted. On the last two tours, 1960-61 and 1967-68, he completed 1000 runs on each occasion. In 1960-61 he scored 1215 at 35.75, and on the last tour 1133 at 31.47. But Apted will be remembered most by Canterbury people for his fine innings of 94 at Lancaster Park on the last tour. Fiji will play mainly ninor associations on its our which begins in Whangarei and extends as far south as Invercargill. The last match will be in Ashburton on August 7.
