Comfortable ‘Casa’
The Casa Del Sol restaurant (above) at 178 High Street continues to offer an ambitious range of dishes in soothing and comfortable surroundings. An extension of the activities of this business is the recent taking over of a bakery and retail outlet in Warrington Street, The Casa Del Sol has always catered for outside functions, and the acquisition of the bakery will extend this part of the operation. The name of the bakery at present is the Pink Pavlova; it will probably be called Maxine’s Pantry. Mrs Maxine Jenkin and her husband Peter run the joint business. They are soon to be joined by another married couple as partners. Mr Jenkin sees a bright future for the business. Plans for improving . the appearance of the restaurant include the installing of more wall hangings and the display of abstract paintings — an expression
of the proprietors’ artistic 'sensibilities. One of the cheeriest sidelights of the Casa Del Sol is .the monthly dining club — for which tickets may be bought in advance — when dishes from a particular country are featured. For that night a licence is secured to allow the wine of that country to appear also. The restaurant has a variety of fixed lunches at $l, and other dishes a la carte. In the summer a smorgasbord is a standing attraction. The dinner menu is extensive. Appetisers run from fruit juice at 25c to crab cocktail at $l. Soup is about 40c. Mushroom dishes are offered at $2; and there is a large range of seafood dishes up to $3.25 for lobster with everything. A filet mignon is $2.45, and a Portuguese steak dish goes to $4. The restaurant offers chicken and egg dishes, and no fewer than nine desserts.
