Mr J. Robertson was top trumpet player
(From- Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, June 23. The death occurred at Westport on Saturday of. Mr John Robertson, who achieved great success in musical circles as a trumpeter.
Mr Robertson was the eldest son of one of Westport’s best-known families, his father, Mr John Robertson sen., having been Mayor of Westport for many years. Mr Robertson was the first of a group of young members of the Westport Municipal Band who went overseas to establish high reputations. After winning New Zealand comet championships, Mr Robertson went to Australia to play in the Capital Theatre at Melbourne. He then went I to Britain and played in the , St Hilda Colliery Band, with 1 which' he toured Canada, and ■ there joined- the Toronto Symphony Orchestra as principal trumpeter. He later toured England with a 8.8. C. band under ; Jack Payne. Mr Robertson in more reI cent years was active in Australia, being principal trum- . peter in the Melbourne Sym- ■ phony Orchestra under Sir , Eugene Goosens, and later taking a similar position with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
