Rates in the Sockbum County Borough area may rise 12| per cent, and rates in the Hornby County Borough area may rise 10 per cent as a result of recommendations made to the Paparua County Council by the two borough councils when they met last evening. The increased rates, if approved, would offset the effects of inflation and rising fuel and labour costs, the councillors were told. The chairman of the Hornby County Borough Council (Mr H. W. Bennett) said the increases were unavoidable. “The only way to avoid them would be to reduce public works to an unacceptable level,” he said. ’ The increase will raise the rate of levy in the Hornby area from the present ,2947 c in the dollar to .3242 c and from ,2456 c to .2763 c in the dollar in the Sockbum area. On estimated expenditure for the coming year both borough councils will emerge with a small deficit even if the rate rise is approved. The motion to recommend the rise was unanimous amongst Sockbum County Borough councillors. Cr K. Chisholm, of 'the Hornby County Borough, voted against the motion.
