Objections to plant
Two objections have been lodged against the proposal of Alcan New Zealand Ltd, to establish a sl.3m aluminium extrusion plant near the Main North Road about a mile from the southern boundary of Kaiapoi. The objections have been lodged with the Eyre County Council in response to an application by the company for a district planning change of use to allow the plant to be established on what is now designated as rural land. The objections have been lodged by the Ministry of Works and the Canterbury Regional Planning Authority. As well, one local resident is seeking assurance on what powers the council has to police any conditions that it might impose if the application is granted. Three parties have made submissions in support ‘of the application, which will be heard by the council tomorrow afternoon.
