Mediocre times at S.I swimming carnival

Many of New Zealand's best swimmers were at thet South Island inter-centre carnival at the Queen Elizabeth || Park pool on Saturday evening, but times were far from spectacular.

Some members of the Commonwealth Games team were beaten bv lesser-

known swimmers, but the times were generally slow, and it was obvious that several of the Games swimmers are not yet back into full training, after a hard summer.

Miss J M. Parkhouse (Canterbury), was the only one of the four Commonwealth Games medalists competing. In spite oi competing in West Germany and Britain last month, she was still in good form, winning ihree events in good times. For tile second time in recent weeks she showed that she is developing into a usful individual medley swimmer.

Miss Parkhouse won the 100 m [freestyle in Imin 2.ssec. just more than 2sec outside her Neyv Zealand record. Her time for the 400 m freestyle was comparatively slower, but she did not have the event ail her own way. Close behind were fellorv Games representatives. Misses A. Calder (Otago) and S. Kennedy (Eastern Districts). Her 200 m individual medley time of 2min 35.35ec was good, considering she had two hard freestyle races before the event. M. Trembath (Canterbury) won three events. His best effort was in the 100 m backstroke. P. Thorogood (Auckland), the Games representative, could only finish lourth. Trembath won bv six metres. Howey er, in tile 2(l(im individual medley Trembath beat the Games medley swimmer. A. [Fogel (Wellington). W. B. Naylor (Southland) liad no trouble winning the two men's i ireestyle events, the 100 m in a I particularly fast time. • Miss J. P. Lowe (Wanganui) struggled to win the women’s 100 m breaststroke, and in the 200 m race she could not break 3min, finishing second to Miss F. Nervall (Southland). In tlie women's lOOnt butterfly, Miss D. Ledgerwood (Otago) had to fight to stave off a strong challenge from Miss L. Rowe (Canterbury). The Otago girl won by a touch. Abbreviations used in tile following results are: Auckland (A.), Canterbury (C.). Eastern Districts (E.D.), Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay (H.8.-P.8.), Otago (O.), Southland (S.). Wellington (Wgtn), Waikato (Wk.), Wanganui (Wn.).
