CRANMER TAKE HOCKEY LEAD

Last year’s bottom-placed team, Cranmer, has taken a half-point lead after the completion of the fourth round of the Canterbury senior women’s hockey competition.

Cranmer gained a close 2-1 win over Rawhiti to take the narrow lead from Burnside. The two leading teams meet in the fifth round next Saturday.

The results were; Digbys 3, Aranui 2; Burnside 1. University 0; Harewood 2, Carlton 0; Cranmer 2, Rawhiti I. The points are: Cranmer 3, Burnside 2j, Aranui, Harewood and Rawhiti 2, Carlton, Digbys and University IJ. Burnside v. University The solitary goal came well into the first half after Burnside had been pressurising University’s defence, and the Burnside’s inside left, B. Chapman, netted the goal. "

In the second half both teams had periods of control, University in particular had a spell of constant attack when shots were peppered at Burnside’s goal — but no equaliser was forthcoming. For University L. Paterson toiled constantly and covered considerable ground to regain possession. Rawhiti v. Cranmer Although there were some exciting moments in both goal circles, the first half was scoreless. The scoring began late in the second half. E. Somers (Cranmer) netted twice. However, play then became scrappy and Rawhiti exerted pressure and amid mistakes from both teams, Rawhiti scored its only goal. Ravvhiti’s right back. J. Wright, broke up many Cranmer attacks and C. Berry, left half, played a steady game. Cranmer’s best, players were R. Moch and B. Roper, both wings. Harewood v. Carlton In an exciting game, Carlton took control in the first half, but the supremacy was reversed during the second half. Carlton had many opportunities to score but time and time again failed to net a result. Harewood quickly took control of the second half when its right flank of S. Howell and L. Schultz became dominant. Howell opened the scoring with a good goal from the right wing position, then J. Latham made it 2-0. Harewood's backs, L. Sutherland and K. Gilray, coped well with the Carlton attacks in the first half, while D. Fleming (Carlton) remained steady under pressure from Harewood in the second half. In the closing stages of the first half, Aranui fought back and two quick goals by inside left, B. Coull, evened the score. Digbys H. Boerlage scored the deciding goal in the second half when she raced on to the loose ball and pushed it into the back of the net.
