The veteran Australian vachtsman, C. lire, crossed the start I line of the singie-hapded Tasman . race at noon today. 22 days after [setting out from New Plymouth. His arrival in his battered yacht Mirrool was the climax to a series of events that began In I the Tasman on Mav 3 with the J loss of the mast. As he was still onlv 200 miles [off the New Zealand coast, he decided to return. Under jury ''rigged storm jib and motor, he I came slowly south-east. On May 9. his fuel reserves I almost exhausted, Ure resorted 'lto his emergency radio beacon I' A signal was picked up by a I I commercial airliner and next -day an R.N.Z.A.F. Orion found I the yacht after a 14-hour search. , The tanker British Aluca then supplied the yacht with enough ,'diesel fuel to reach New Plv I mouth. t That was nine days ago and , ■ although several independent 11 aerial searches have been made •; no-one noticed the Mirror until !she was just off Port Taranaki.
