No ban on butter

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, May 13.

A ban on export dairy produce from New Plymouth to Bluff, which was to have been imposed tomorrow morning by the Cool Store Workers’ Union, has been called off.

The ban was to have been in retaliation to a ban by the Meat Workers’ Union on the loading out from freezing works of any meat intended for cool stores. The secretary of the Cool

Store Workers’ Union (Mr P. J. Mansor) said tonight that the meat workers’ ban was a “ban in words only, but not in effect.”

“Under the circumstances, we Have decided to call off our ban,” he said.

However, the secretary of the Meat Workers’ Union (Mi F. E. McNulty) said today that the ban was being enforced, and the Federation of Labour was being kept informed of developments.

The F.O.L. has undertaken to solve the dispute in keeping with a recommendation passed at last week’s annual conference.

The demarcation dispute is one of a series of arguments

between the meat workers and the cool store workers over Who should handle containers.

Mr Mansor said today that the meat workers had broken their ban, but Mr McNulty said he had “no knowledge” of the alleged incident. Mr Mansor said meat was loaded out from cool stores at Timaru and sent back to the freezing works at Pukeuri, 40 miles north of Oamaru.

“The meat workers ignored the ban for this one container of meat, which was packed, and shipped out,” he said. “The ban has been announced all right, but to all intents and purposes it is not being put to effect.”
