Mt Cook delays

Additional accommodation at Mount Cook could be provided without detracting from the scenic environment, the New Zealand Travel Association, said in a statement.

While recognising the difficulties of providing accommodation in National Parks, and the importance of preserving the environment in these and other scenic areas, it did not believe the two were irreconcilable. “It further believes that the number of bodies, organisations and individuals, both official and unofficial, which are involved in environmental protection measures has been extended to the point of futility.” Delays at Mount Cook were retarding the growth of New Zealand’s tourist industry. Annual and peak occupancy rates were so high that it was impossible to obtain accommodation there many periods of the year. “The association hopes that speedy decisions will soon be taken so that work may begin as soon as possible.”
