Power crisis

Sir, —The editorial on price increases amazes me. While we must have tempor-

ary controls, surely a country must remain small, backward and debt-ridden unless it plans for the future. Even now, the South Island has more than enough electricity. The North Island will undoubtedly make more and niore use of natural gas, and a switch to atomic energy cannot be discounted. Only by encouraging people to bear with present shortages, but to continue to “think electrically” can the various electricity projects be worth the vast amounts of money and manpower expended on them. After the power cuts of the 50s it took many thousands of dollars worth of advertising, to bring electricity consumption to its present level.—Yours etc., ANTI DOLDRUMS—ANTI SMOG. May 13, 1974.
