MEAT BUYING-IN POWER

f y.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. May 13. An Order-in-Council was approved by a special Cabinet meeting today to enable the Meat Board to market beef. The Minister of Agriculture, (Mr Moyle) said in an interview today that the regulation would give the board the same opportunities and powers for beef as it had for lamb. Mr Moyle said the Meat Board had made it clear that it would not automatically use these powers. But they were now there, s-iould the board decide to intervene. Such a decision was one for the Meat Board. “It was intimated to me by the chairman (Mr C. Hilgendorf) in his request for these powers that the present price situation did not warrant immediate intervention. There would be intervention only if there w’as a further substantial fall in prices.” Mr Hilgendorf declined to comment on the substance of the order, but did say the board was “pleased” with the Cabinet’s decision to approve it. On May 2 the board put forward a proposal to Mr Moyle, to allow it power to buy beef for sale if the beef schedule declined further.
