MR KIRK ABSENT

f.N'.Z. Press Associaiiozi > WELLINGTON, May 13. The Prime Minister (Mr Kirk), who is recovering from pleurisy, did not make his scheduled speech to the Labour Party conference in Wellington tonight.

Instead, the Deputy Prime Minister (Mr Watt) presented the Parliamentary report — which had been written by Mr Kirk —and the third ranked Cabinet member, Mr Freer, seconded the report and made a speech.

Announcing that Mr Kirk would not be speaking tonight, the party’ president, Mr C. M. Bennett, said that Conference delegates conveyed their good wishes to Mr Kirk and hoped that he would be back “in full working trim” shortly.

Mr Watt paid a tribute to Mr Kirk and said he was proud to be deputy to a man of such courage and determination.
