May 12 The French presidential candidates, Mr Valery Giscard D'Estaing (Conservative) and Mr Francois Mitterrand (Socialist) remain almost equal in popularity as the last week of the campaign begins. An opinion poll showed the candidates to he level on Thursday but on Fri day night there was a memorable and crucial Miminute televised debate, watched by an estimated 30 million viewers, which ended in a very' !, li m points victory for Mr Giscard D'Estaing. A surv y indicated that the debate had made 10 per cent of voters change their voting intentions for May 19. Both candidates appeared separately on television for 10 minutes last night. Mr Mitterrand said he wanted Frenchmen to be closely associated with the country's political life and Mr Giscard D'Estaing said he was trying to win over loft-wingers and trade unionists who refused the Socialist-Com-munist alliance.
