General strike call in India

(N.Z. P. A. -Reuter—Copyright)

NEW DELHI, May 12

The Indian Confederation of Trade Unions has decided to call for a general strike on Wednesday to support the national rail stoppage, now in its fifth day.

Yesterday rail leaders formally rejected a Government offer as unworkable.

Earlier yesterday the Prime Minister (Mrs Gandhi) told a parliamentary party meeting she did not want a confrontation with the unions. However the railmen, who are striking for more pay, are still angry over continued arrests of members and union

leaders, which now total more than 7000. Press reports say that in the Bombay region more than 1100 were arrested yesterday alone, making a total of 3844 for the western section of the State-run railway—the fourth largest in the world. The Government’s tough line has also been underlined by eviction notices on families living in railway accommodation in some', areas.
