Many seek advice

The Citizens’ Advice Bureau handled an average of 17 calls a day from April 1 to April 26, according to the bureau organiser (Mrs J. Lunn). There were 289 calls—B3 per cent were by telephone, and 75 per cent were from females.

A majority of the calls were for local and national information and advice on free legal assistance. There were 37 calls about marriage problems and 25 about family and personal difficulties. One market gardener who had been caught in the floods rung to ask how to get rid of flood water as fast as possible. Another person asked if it was the office who knew everything because she wanted to know about concession fares for the aged. There were 40 inquiries about social welfare and health and 24 about consumer and financial budgeting. There were several inquiries about the immigration policy in New Zealand and one person wanted to know how long one had to live in New Zealand before applying for citizenship.
