DAMAGED VESSEL

Assessment of cost (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, May 12. After a busy week-end of work on the storm-damaged research vessel Acheron,, the full extent of the damage can now be assessed. The owner of the Acheron, Mr A. J. Black, said that the hull seemed to have escaped unscathed but it was too early to make any assessment of how long the vessel would be laid up. Work is continuing on stripping the waterlogged stores, linen, and bedding, and protective measures are being taken on permanent fixtures .to prevent them being damaged by salt-water action while the vessel is being repaired. The vessel, which is insured, will be repaired by the Port Chalmers firm which built it, Miller and Tunnage, Ltd. Mr lan Thomas, who was taken injured from the Soviet trawler which escorted the Acheron into port, was treated at hopsital and discharged.
