‘Women’s opinions not sought’

Women were now facing problems because their opinions were not sought on issues that concerned them and decisions concerning women were made by men, the Mayoress of Christchurch (Mrs Alexia Pickering) said yesterday. Mrs Pickering was opening the business sessions of the national Rebekah conference—the women’s section of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Increasing demands were being made on women and they would have to face up to many challenges in the future, Mrs Pickering said. “Men are realising now, I think, the definite contributions that women are making.”

Oddfellowship provided women with fine principles and a history of philanthropic work, Mrs Pickering said, and it was this sort of service that women were seeking.

The Rebekah conference began on Saturday and will end tomorrow.
