World Cup car rally

Cowan (Scotland) when competitors in the 1974 World Cup car rally reached Southampton for their Channel crossing to France. More than 50 drivers from 15 countries had earlier left their starting-point at Wembley for the 11,000-mile rally which includes a two-way crossing of the Sahara Desert. It is scheduled to end at Munich Stadium. West Germany, on May 25. Cowan, in a Ford Escort, trailed Zasada, driving a Porsche Carrera, by 12 seconds. Third was a hus-band-and-wife team, M. and A. O’Connell, from Ireland, while the former grand prix driver, S. Moss, was twelfth. The Sahara stage was mapped out by helicopters, and the only road signs there are painted oil drums and bits of desert debris. Race officials tipped Cowan and Shekhar Mehta (Lancia) as the likeliest winners of the £16,000 prize. After the desert crossing, the remaining cars will travel by road and boat through Italy to Greece and Turkey and then to Jugoslavia, Austria. and Germany.
