Firmer tone to quiet Aust, markets

Australian markets closed on a gnerally firmer note in quiet trading yesterday, as buyers made cautious purchases. However, most of the gains recorded at the close represented marginal movements.

B.H.P. closed 2c firmer at 842 c and E.Z.I. gained 1c at 396 c. Herald W.T. and Leighton were firmer but B.N.S.W. and National Bank sold lower but C.B.C. gained 5c at 245 c. Slater Walker and Lend Lease were easier. Peko-Wallsend rose 15c to 430 c and M.I.M. 4c to 245 c. (C.R.A. was 5c higher at 290 c and Western Mining firmed - to 170 c. Queensland Mines jumped 10c to 100 c and Pancontinenital rose 3c to 140 c. B.H. 'South, Metals Ex and North - B.H. dropped to lower levels. | Woodside rose 5c to 150 c.
