Council pay “too low”

Problems with getting and retaining drivers and labourers were reported to a meeting of the Paparua County Council last evening. The County Engineer (Mr (J. D. Annan) said that in the last year, 48 labourers had ;left the council’s employ, as (well as 14 drivers. In the majority of cases, the men said they were leaving for higher-paid jobs. The response to newspaper advertisements for staff had been disappointing, he said, and it was evident that there was a continual drift to industrial and contracting work. On his recommendation, it was decided to draw wage rates to the attention of the New Zealand County Council Industrial Union of Employers, and ask for comment.
