Wheelchair presented

A wheelchair was presented to the Christchurch Cathedral by the North Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Red Cross Society at the annual church parade of the society on Sunday.

The Mayoress (Mrs A. Pickering) thanked the society on behalf of the citizens of Christchurch, and sat in the chair during the service. At the end she was wheeled out, using the special ramp which was added to the Cathedral during the alterations to the Square.

The service was attended by 100 representatives of the junior Red Cross, three emergency relief units from Christchurch, St Andrew’s College, and St Bede’s College, the Mayor (Mr N. G. Pickering), the Mayoress, and the Minister of Police (Mr Connelly).

The sermon was to be preached by the secretarygeneral of the New Zealand Red Cross Society (Commander M. C. Ashdown) but he was delayed at Wellington Airport.

The Right Rev. G. V. Daly, the patron of the North Canterbury centre of. the Red Cross led the prayers, and also preached the sermon.
