Flat ripped apart
r.V.Z. Press Association’’ AUCKLAND. April 29.
An elderly couple escaped! injury at 4 o’clock this morn- j ing when an explosion ripped through a Mount Eden flat. The couple were thrown about in their beds when a 30-gallon hot water cylinder exploded.
The cylinder had been replaced 11 days ago and was under a two-year guarantee. The explosion blew out one wall, firmly embedded an antique clock in the lounge ceiling, threw a china cabinet from one side of the room to another and flung a stereogram through a window. All of the windows in the flat were broken and the building was shifted off its foundations. The basement of the flat, where the cylinder was situated, was extensively damaged. The explosion is thought to have been caused by a blocked steam outlet on the cylinder.
