Miller wins fifth title

J. Miller (United States) won his fifth professional golf tournament of the year when a four-foot par-saving putt on the seventy-second hole earned him victory in the Tournament of Champions at Carlsbad. Miller had a final round of 69 and won by a stroke from two other Americans, B. Allin and J. Mahaffey. Miller had a 72-hole total : of 280 (eight under par) on j the sunny, wind-swept La [Costa Country Club course.! Allin, the leader for the first [two rounds, had a closing 71,j and Mahaffey, a runner-up for the third time this year, shot; a 70.

The third-round leader. R. J. Charles, the New Zealand, left-hander, returned a disappointing five-over-par 77 in the last round and finished six shots behind Miller on 286.

Soccer.— Chile crashed to an embarrassing 2-1 defeat bv a; Guatemalan club side, Municipal, in Guatemala City., and Brazil drew, 0-0, with Greece in Rio de Janeiro in World Cup warmup matches. And the Netherlands has named a 40-man provisional World Cup squad, including J. Cruyff, of Barcelona. Ten players are from Ajax Amsterdam, and 10 are from Feyenoord Rotterdam. Rugby.— E.
