River pollution

\ Sir, On April 3 while : visiting Mona Vale 1 was very disturbed to observe a gardener in the grounds raking a large heap of fallen leaves into the river. The City Council is always urging people to keep the city tidy and decrying others 'who pollute the river with garden refuse and other litter. May I suggest it set a good example by instructing its employees to observbasic anti-pollution measures and see they are carried out?—Yours, etc., B. M. ARMSTRONG. April 3 1974.

[The Town Clerk (Mr J. H. Gray) replies: “A staff member was raking duck droppings from the bank into the river although it is possible some leaves were mixed in

with these. The droppings had fouled the lawns along the river edge, and their removal was considered the most cost-efficient method of disposal. However, to avoid possible pollution, the staff have been instructed to discontinue the practice, and your correspondent is thanked for raising the matter.”]
