Berkeley wins bowls singles
Brilliant drawing was the I ! feature of the final of the i Canterbury indoor bowls I singles championship played between M Berkeley (Linwood i Avenue) and J. Fallen (Horn- t by W.M.C.) at the Kearney's t Road hall yesterday. Berkeley was down 1-5 after}! four ends, but picked up three; points on the next two ends to I trail Fallen, a former Otago I, i representative, by one at half-1. 'wav. ' The next two ends were shared j j in singles and Berkeley levelledl [ the scores with a single on the , ninth. Fallen regained the lead I, , with yet another single on the ' , tenth end. but Berkeley, play- ‘ ing a perfect bowl which trailed I the jack, scored two on the•, , eleventh end and a single on! the last to win, 9-7. The experienced Berkeley had to withstand a determined challenge from his semi-final oppon- ' • ent. D. Earl (North Canterbury), 'before winning 11-10. Fallen, however, had an easy ■lO-3 victory against Mrs K. ; Kiesanowski fArawai. in the . other semi-final. Bellis was eliminated early by a previous title-holder, L. G. McLennan, who won 12-5. ' Berkeley had a fine first-round match with P. Shearer. Afterseven ends Barkeley led 3-2 with i two ends drawn.
