Three teams unbeaten in women’s basketball
The defending champions, Checkers, retained their unbeaten record when they defeated Y.M.C.A.-Rebels, 61-44, in the second round of the Canterbury women’s A grade basketball competition in Cowles Stadium on Saturday.
Two other teams, MaireA and Mairehau B. are also unbeaten.
! Points after two rounds ■are: Checkers 4, Mairehau 4, i Mairehau B 4, Orients 2, Rangiora 2, Y.M.C.A. Rebels 0, Bumside 0, University 0. Checkers again displayed impressive depth, beating Y. M.C.A. Rebels by a comfortable margin. As in previous games, they took the lead in the first two minutes of the first spell, and at half-time led by 34-18.
Most of Checkers’ points came from two former New Zealand representatives, S. Rennell and J. Baker, who scored 20 and 13 points, respectively. However, Y.M.C.A.-Rebels kept their spirits up and at times drove vigorously into the defensive area of their opponents. The final score was 61-44. EVENTFUL MATCH
Mairehau B beat Orients 42-30 in an eventful match. The teams were neck and neck until just
after the Start of the second half when Mairehau took the lead. K. Adamson top-scored for Mairehau with 14 points and S. South, scored nine. Mairehau A took an early lead over University A and went on to dominate the game. P. Hinklev scored some outstanding baskets for the winning team, finishing with 27 points, bhe had good support from J. Armstrong (20 points), and the team won 75 to 41. level scoring Rangiora beat Burnside A 60-33 after level scoring in the early stages of the game. But Rangiora then scored 15 points in succession and Burnside was unable to keep the scorers out. S. Kearney and K. Tau, who each scored 15 points, were the outstanding players for Rangiora.
