Good golf scores in bad weather
In atrocious conditions, three of the Canterbury team to play in the Freyberg Rosebowl tournament at Whangarei next month returned very good scores in the Coringa 34- ' hole ooen golf tournament on Saturday. D. N. Turner, No. 2 in the Rosebowl team, won the senior , gross with a total of 153 with rounds of 75 and 78. Only a ] stroke behind him was the No. 4 Rosebowl player, J. W. A. | Whitaker, who was a model of I consistency with two rounds of 77. It was in the morning round ! that conditions were at their i worst with driving rain and strong gusty winds, but Turner ! finished only three strokes over the card with a remarkable 75. . Only two shots behind were Whitaker, and a contender for
the Rosebowl team, S. S. Robin son.
P. Hartstone, who will fill No. 3 position at Whangarei, was in fourth position, four, strokes behind Turner, after the morning round and remained there after the next 18 holes. But his afternoon showed what a fine Slayer he is. At the sixteenth e lost a ball, but was unperturbed and birdied the last two holes. Turner paid tribute to the course, saying that it had played extremely well in spite of the unpleasant conditions. Leading scores were:— Senior 153—Turner, 75, 78. 154—Whitaker. 77, 77. 157—Robinson, 77, 80'. 159—Hartstone, 79, 80. Intermediate 181—G. F. D’Auvergne. 188—F. J. Shaw.
