Tennis move 'premature’

Talk of South Africa taking part in next year’s Federation Cup women’s tennis tournament was premature, said the organiser of the Christchurch Committee on Southern Africa (Ms J. Basher) yesterday.

Ms Basher was commenting on a statement made by the chairman of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association (Mr I. D. Wells) that he could see no reason why South Africa could not compete in the tournament. However, Ms Basher welcomed reported changes taking place in lawn tennis in South Africa, allowing blacks more scope to compete with whites. “It is vital that blacks be given sporting facilities and opportunities equal to those of their white countrymen,” said Ms Basher. “Failing this, sporting contacts between our countries cannot be resumed.”

Mr Wells was willing to overlook the fact that there was no multi-racial tennis in South Africa, said Ms Basher. The South African Government allowed racially mixed sport between nations, but nor individuals.

“It is thus impossible for black South Africans to have access to adeauate competi tion or facilities both at club and provincial level,” she Isaid.
