Death sentence on Chileans
(X.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright)
SANTIAGO, April 28.
Five civilians have been sentenced to death by a Chilean court-martial for trying to organise resistance against the armed forces who seized power last September, Colonel Jose Castro, Governor of the province of Colchagua, has announced.
The five condemned persons are two students, both aged 20, two peasant leaders, and an official of the Agrarian Reform Corporation formed by the deposed Left-wing Government of the late President Salvador Allende.
In the town of Punta Arenkost, the military
Mayor (Colonel Raul Benavides) said yesterday that 47 members of various Leftwing parties had been convicted by court martial and given sentences ranging from one year to life imprisonment.
Colonel Benavides’s brief communique mentioned neither the charges against the 47, nor their identities, nor when the court martial was held.
Most of the courts martial to try former supporters of President Allende, who died in a military coup d’etat which overthrew his Popular Unity Government last September, have been held in secret.
The only public court martial in session at present is trying 57 airmen and 10 civilians in the Air. Force Academy in Santiago.
