Fertiliser in lake water

If the waters of Lake Ellesmere became more eutrophied. the authorities could at some stage initroduce regulations to restrict topdressing, said Cr P. :j. Abbott, at a meeting of the Ellesmere County Council yesterday. Cr Abbott, who attended the recent meeting at Christchurch at which Water Resources Council classifications for natural waters were announced, said I that it had been clear that [the authorities believed one [of the biggest causes of the [entrophication of the lake 'was the run-off from farm ‘topdressing. [ The County Engineer fMr ;D. J. May) said the [classifications could affect [the Lincoln sewage scheme [for though Lincoln was a [long way from the lake, the effluent would get into it.

“We will have to ask the Catchment Board for a right to discharge the effluent, but no date has been set for a hearing,” he said.
