Taking after father

Press Association)

PALMERSTON NORTH. The Auckland driver, P. Hughes, took the chequered flag in the Formula Ford international motor race, five seconds ahead of another Auck* lander. J. Murdoch, after an exciting contest on the Manfield course on Saturday.

Much of the excitement came from the 22-year-old Geoffrey Brabham, son of the treble world champion. Jack Brabham. He only just made the starting grid of 30 cars after replacing a broken piston .and worked his way up from nineteenth to fourth in the 25-lap race.

Murdoch, fresh from a win at Bay Park the previous week-end, took an early lead, which he held to lap six. Hughes and Murdoch then swapped places before Hughes motored clear on the tenth lap, never to be headed. Meanwhile. Brabham had moved up to sixth, lOsec behind the leader, and was; involved in a fierce duel with D. Oxton, G. Walker and D. McMillan.

On lap 15. Brabham was fkec tn arrears, and by lap 20 he had passed Oxton and McMillan, and was only ssec behind the leader.

The Australian moved past' Walker on the next lap but Walker came again in the second to la«t lap and was half a car ahead of Brabham at the flag.
