Power line criticised

A proposal by the Marlborough Electric Power Board to put up an 11,000 volt power line from French Pass across the Pass to D’Urville Island has been opposed by the Nature Conservation Council on the ground that it will seriously detract from the pass’s scenic value. The council recommended that any cables needed to supply electricity from the national grid should be laid on the sea bed, and suggested that the Power Board critically study power generation on the island with a view to supplying permanent residences and farms without drawing from the grid.

In the event of reticulation, the council was also seriously concerned that land designation measures should be brought into force [to stop the rapid spread of (holiday houses on the island.
