The Spice-Box of Earth. By Leonard Cohen. Cape. 93 pp.
“The Spice-Box of Earth” (1961) was Cohen's second collection of verse, and in it he continued to explore the range of subjects suggested in the title of his first book, “Let Us Compare Mythologies” (1956). Reading through this reissue, one notes that the 25 poems not included in his “Selected Poems” (1969) are an interesting reflection of his characteristic early work, which makes up for occasional verbal insecurity with the vitality of his thought pattern and his fascination with grotesque details, especially in love poems. This is the second recent Cohen reprint from Cape.
