FIRST OF 23 NEW BUSES

The Christchurch Transport Board yesterday took delivery of the first of 23 new buses which will cost $735,000. The new bus has one more seat than those in the existing fleet. Its windows are larger, and the steps are closer to the ground. The bus, and the others like it, should have been available in time for the Commonwealth Games but labour shortages and shipping delays prevented this. The new vehicle is the first of its type in New Zealand and the first to be exported from Britain where about 2000 are in service. It will carry 70 nflwpnnorc w— 47 «pafpd

The chassis was imported from England and the bodywork was made in Auckland. The bus is quieter to ride in than the older ones. The engine is mounted at the rear, and it has a fourspeed, semi-automatic gearbox with lock-up clutch. DOORS WIDER The doors are wider, and the driver’s compartment is designed for easier access to all controls and instruments. The board plans to phase out some of the older buses as the new ones arrive. It also expects more miles per gallon out of the nmv vehicles.
