Lake to be opened

Some duck-shooters who have built miamias at Lake Ellesmere might find them a long way from the water next week. This is because the North Canterbury Catchment Board will begin cutting a channel across the beach to the sea at Taumutu early in the week. The board’s chief engineer (Mr R, Macdonald) said yesterday that a week ago the level of the lake was Bin or Sin below the predetermined level at which it would have to be opened. With the increased flow into the lake in the last few days the lake had risen to ■1.13 metres above sea level, and a channel would have to be cut. This was likely to take two or three days. Mr Macdonald said the alke was usuallv opened to the sea two or three time a year.
