Bread in metrics

Quarter loaves, or their equivalent, might be available in Christchurch when bakers began baking in metric weights, the Ministry of Trade and Industry (Mrf Freer) said this week. Mr Freer said a quarter loaf was half of the 11b 12oz loaf baked from two dough units and could be split. Bakers received 1c more (through a higher price and a subsidy) for the lib 12oz loaf' than for the lib Boz loaf. The extra 1c was enough; to cover the difference between the ingredient costs of the two loaves but some bakers were not prepared to bake the larger loaf, said Mr Freer. There was no way that they could be forced to bake a particular commodity, nor should there be. he said.

With the introduction of metric weights, provision had been made for a loaf weighing 350 grams, which was equivalent to about 12|oz compared with 14oz for half of a lib 12oz loaf. Mr Freer said he had asked his department to have appropriate prices approved for bread in metric weights.
